To the Editor: We read with interest the article by Rose et al in the August 2009 issue of the Journal. Ultraviolet B light phototherapy (UVB) is generally considered the safest form of systemic psoriasis therapy in pregnancy. We commend the authors for creating a study to examine the photodegradation of serum folate after exposure to narrowband UVB (nbUVB), given that folate deficiency in the first trimester of pregnancy could predispose to the development of neural tube defects. Although tumor necrosis factor?alfa (TNF?) antagonists are considered category B drugs according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Carter et al reported a disturbing association of infliximab and etanercept with congenital anomalies associated with the vertebral, anal, cardiovascular, tracheoesophageal, renal, limb (VACTERL) syndrome. In their review of more than 120000 adverse events of patients on TNF? antagonist therapy, they found 61 congenital anomalies occurring at higher than expected frequencies. Depressive and anxiety disorders in the postpartum period: how prevalent are they and can we improve their detection?

(University of California - Los Angeles) UCLA researchers used structural magnetic resonance imaging to show for the first time that individuals whose mothers abused methamphetamine during pregnancy (with or without alcohol abuse) had brain structural abnormalities that were more severe than in children whose mothers abused alcohol alone. The researchers identified what brain structures are vulnerable, which may help predict particular learning and behavioral problems in meth-exposed children. Conclusions: Based on the results of this secondary data analyses, a physiologic framework for possible beneficial effects of stretching exercise by enhancing autonomic responses on reducing risks for preeclampsia is proposed and discussed.
