The marked improvement of several immune-mediated inflammatory diseases during pregnancy has drawn attention to pregnancy hormones as potential therapeutics for such disorders. Low molecular weight fractions derived from the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) have remarkable potent immunosuppressive effects in mouse models of diabetes and septic shock. This study sought to understand how drug use and factors associated with drug use influence women?s prenatal care use. A total of 20 semi-structured interviews and 2 focus groups were conducted with a racially/ethnically diverse sample of low-income women using alcohol and drugs in a California county. Women using drugs attend and avoid prenatal care for reasons not connected to their drug use: concern for the health of their baby, social support, and extrinsic barriers such as health insurance and transportation. Pregnancy restores the regenerative capacity of the aged liver via activation of an mTORC1-controlled hyperplasia/hypertrophy switch [Research Communications]
Regenerative capacity is progressively lost with age. Here we show that pregnancy markedly improved liver regeneration in aged mice concomitantly with inducing a switch from proliferation-based liver regeneration to a regenerative process mediated by cell growth. We found that the key mediator of this switch was the Akt/mTORC1 pathway; its inhibition blocked hypertrophy, while increasing proliferation. Moreover, pharmacological activation of this pathway sufficed to induce the hypertrophy module, mimicking pregnancy. In this paper we analyse 1134 emails sent to an emergency contraception website in the USA over the course of one year. Through an examination of the terminology used by authors to describe contraceptive methods, sexual intercourse and other sexual acts, we analyse what those terms signify within their textual context. Evidence for Vertical Transmission of HPV from Mothers to Infants
Few large studies have evaluated concordance based on a broad spectrum of human papillomavirus (HPV) types in oral and genital specimens of mothers and their recently born infants. This information is important in determining whether HPV vaccines administered prior to pregnancy may be useful for preventing vertical transmission. HPV DNA was positive in 30&#37; of mothers and 1.5&#37; of newborns. Maternal/newborn concordance (HPV+/+ or HPV&#x2212;/&#x2212;) was 71&#37;. Among HPV DNA+ mothers, only 3&#37; of their infants were DNA+ and only 1 pair had the same HPV type. Among HPV&#x2212; women, 0.8&#37; of infants were HPV+. Anti-annexin II antibody is associated with thrombosis and/or pregnancy morbidity in antiphospholipid syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus with thrombosis
This study investigated the prevalence of antibody against annexin II (A2) in patients with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It also explored the role of this antibody in thrombosis. Purified recombinant A2 was used in ELISA to measure the levels of IgG anti-A2 antibody in 101 APS patients, 41 SLE patients with thrombosis, 124 SLE patients without thrombosis, and 120 healthy controls. The positive rates of IgG anti-A2 antibody in APS patients and SLE patients with thrombosis were 21.8 and 26.8%, respectively.
